all that jazz

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to branford marsalis!!!

jazz is my favorite music genre.  i listen to wbgo - 88.3 fm.  this station comes straight out of newark, new jersey.  i love both the marsalis' brothers - wynton and branford.

some of my favorite jazz legends include:  thelonious monk, billie holiday, charlie parker, dave brubeck, duke ellington, john coltrane, miles davis, dizzy gillespie, tony bennett, sarah vaughan, ella fitzgerald, al jarreau, harry connick jr., david sanborn, nancy wilson, count basie, frank sinatra, colman hawkins, kenny g., and of course the grandaddy of them all - louis armstrong. there are many more, these are just off the top of my head.

but, of course, there would be no jazz without the blues.  so next post will be about my favorite blues singers/musicians

if you enjoy jazz, who are your favorites?  cheers!!

  1. You have such good taste! I must admit I don't know much Jazz artists by name, but I do love Miles Davis. ( plus a few that you've named). looking forward to your Blues post!

  2. I like some jazz now and again too -- classics like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dave Brubeck, Blossom Dearie and also Canadian artists like Moe Koffman, Salome Bey, Diana Krall.

  3. Oh, I love some good silky jazz. Sarah Vaughan is one of my favorites, and I have some of her really early works on 45s. Ella's, too. I love their smoky, sexy voices. And I love instrumentals, too.

Now, for funky jazz, nothing beats the impromptu jam sessions at Preservation Hall in New Orleans.

  4. Off the top of my head, I wouldn't be able to name one single jazz band/singer/performer/musician. Can you believe that? But when you list them like that, I'm like "Oh yeah...that one and that one...and that one, too". LOL... I must say that Louis Armstrong is definitely a favourite!

  5. Harry Connick Jr. and Louis Armstrong. Louis many years ago participated in the famous Italian Festival di Sanremo, and he sang a song in Italian would you believe? The title is "Ciao, Stasera Son Qui", he was so cute with his accent.

  6. Jazz musicians are in a special class of artists. My favorites are Etta James (At Last), Louis Armstrong (What a Wonderful World), and Harry Connick Jr. I don't even know enough about him to cite specific songs, but I recently discovered what an amazing talent he is. I'm surprised - given he has a young, rockish look.

    Be well, dear friend.
