I was watching a British documentary about the sometimes aggressive, and downright hostile nature of these birds. It's a particular breed of swan (I can't remember the name) that are the most ferocious.
Of course, they will attack you if they think you are threat such as standing to close to their nesting site. What is ironic is that the people who take care of these birds know about their violent behavior. Swans will violently attack anyone if they get close enough. Like the idiot worker in the documentary who went right up to the nest (which by the way had eggs) just to "make sure everything was all right." I don't know if it was the male or female species that assaulted him.
Also, there's a couple who is suing some zoo or sanctuary because the swans they take care of attacked and killed a man while he was out in his boat. The wife of the dead man states that the people who take care of these birds knew they were dangerous and didn't warn the couple. The swan attacked the boat, tipping it over and the man drowned. Cheers!!
Anyone who's seen that move Black Swan knows how dangerous any swan is, LOL!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen the movie, and now I don't think I want to. Cheers!!
DeleteI don't feel either way about these birds. I can take them or leave them. Though I am sorry to hear he drown. Wonder why he was on a boat without one of those jacket things. When we used to travel the water, EVERYONE including adults had to wear a life jacket.
ReplyDeleteNo jacket. No boat ride.
I think swans are beautiful-looking birds. I can't remember if the guy in the documentary was wearing a safety jacket or not. Cheers!!
DeleteThey are okay, but not my favorite looking. Not a real big bird person, on the whole. Now dogs, to me, way prettier and cutter.
DeleteThough I can see why you like the swans.
Did he know how to swim? Did the birds pull him under water? Why no life coat? All those things, I wonder about.
Swans can indeed be very scary - as can geese!! Very mean birds indeed - though very beautiful.

For six years I lived on a site of a geese sanctuary so I know damn well how aggressive these birds can be. Especially when you encounter them crossing the street. Cheers!!
DeleteIn my experience, swans are always aggressive. I live near a pond, and whenever I pass, I have to run for my life as the swans are following me, trying to bite me in the legs :)
ReplyDeleteThe same thing happened to me with geese. Whenever I would pass by them, especially a group of them, they would just come running after you. I swear I had to run for my life. Cheers!!
DeleteThose are horrid stories. I can enjoy pictures of swans, but now I never want to be near one. It's a shame. They look so pretty and innocent.

Exactly - looks can be deceiving. But like you Robyn, I don't want to get near these suckers. Cheers!!
DeleteI knew geese could be on the aggressive side, but I didn't realize the same was true of swans. Then again, I've never been in a position to be in close proximity to swans before. Always from a distance. (Evidently from a SAFE distance...) But they look so majestic as they glide across the water. (sigh) Oh well. Guess I won't be trying to make friends with any in the near future.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I saw a video recently of a pair of black swans feeding bread to some fish! Really cool.
Cheers! Happy weekend.
Many don't realize how hostile these critters are. Sate is always best. Cheers!!
DeleteOH, my goodness I didn't know they were dangerous! Never expected it.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend!
